How Avocado Supports Weight Loss

Hello everyone!

The notion that consuming fats leads to weight gain is a persistent myth. However, certain fats like those found in avocados can actually aid in weight loss. Curious to learn how? Let’s delve into it.

Is Saturated Fat Harmful?

Saturated fat has often been criticized and debated. Recent findings reveal that trans fats and hydrogenated fats, such as those in margarine, are the real culprits behind not just weight gain but also heart issues. Refined carbohydrates, not saturated fats, have been identified as the main contributors to rising obesity levels and various diseases.

Avocados

Avocado, a fruit native to Mexico and Central America, is known for its calorie density. Just 100g of avocado provides 160 calories, with more than two-thirds of the calories coming from monounsaturated oleic acid. Research indicates that the body utilizes oleic acids as a slow-burning energy source, unlike saturated fats. Opting for monounsaturated fats over polyunsaturated fats and carbs can help reduce the risk of weight gain and diabetes.

Avocados contain Omega-9 fats, which offer numerous health benefits. They aid in lowering bad cholesterol (LDL) levels while boosting good cholesterol (HDL) levels. Omega-9 fats facilitate the absorption of antioxidants and fat-soluble vitamins from food. Pairing avocados with nutrient-rich vegetables can enhance the assimilation of vitamins and nutrients.

Weight Loss and Appetite

Avocados contribute to reduced hunger levels. Sometimes, thirst is mistaken for hunger, leading to weight gain. Therefore, when feeling peckish, try drinking water first, and observe the difference.

Including natural foods like avocados and almonds in your diet can help curb post-meal hunger pangs. Avocados, with their rich, buttery flavor, healthy fiber content, monounsaturated fats, and protein while being low in carbs, promote a sense of fullness after consumption, known as satiety.

Given the numerous benefits of avocados, they can be a valuable addition to a healthy diet plan aimed at weight loss.

  • It possesses anti-inflammatory properties, aiding in arthritis prevention.
  • It helps regulate blood sugar levels due to its low carb and sugar content.
  • At a laboratory level, it has shown anti-cancer properties, although human studies are lacking.
  • It promotes heart health.

Unfortunately, avocados are not extensively popular in India. While some shake stands offer “butter fruit” shakes, as it is locally termed, the fruit’s full potential is yet to be realized in the Indian subcontinent.

Avocado cultivation in India is primarily limited to regions like the hill slopes of Tamil Nadu, Coorg, Kerala, certain areas of Karnataka, primarily in the southern parts of the country. However, successful avocado cultivation has also been observed in Sikkim.

When selecting avocados, opt for ones that are slightly soft to the touch but without any sunken spots or cracks, indicating ripeness. Firm avocados can be ripened at home by placing them in a paper bag at room temperature. Refrigerate ripe avocados for up to a week.
