I undergo thyroid tests every six months, which has now increased to every six weeks as per my endocrinologist’s advice. While my thyroid condition has not caused major health problems, I have been struggling with weight gain. Many women in their fifties, including myself, face similar challenges despite regular exercise and monitoring food intake. In this article, I will share tips on a thyroid diet plan for Indians and sustainable weight loss strategies recommended by my doctor.

## Tips for a Weight Loss Journey:

### Choose the Right Foods
Following diets like Paleo and Whole 30, which are beneficial for autoimmune triggers, can be effective. Including anti-inflammatory and healthy foods in your diet can aid in weight loss. Some recommended foods for individuals with hypothyroidism are fermented foods, lean proteins, foods rich in healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids, cruciferous vegetables, green teas, and certain sweeteners.

### Foods to Avoid
Inflammatory foods can hinder weight loss for hypothyroid individuals. It is advisable to follow a well-balanced gluten-free, soy-free, and dairy-free diet. Some foods to avoid include dairy, grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, legumes, nightshade vegetables, vegetable oils, coffee, chocolate, and sugar.

### Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting can help in controlling weight gain. However, individuals with diabetes should consult their healthcare provider before considering this approach.

### Limit Sugar Intake
Reducing sugar consumption is essential for weight loss. Sugar is known to cause inflammation, making it important to eliminate it from your (hypo) thyroid diet plan for weight loss.

### Manage Stress
Stress can worsen an underactive thyroid. Implement stress-relief techniques such as getting adequate sleep, avoiding electronic devices before bedtime, practicing meditation, and exercising regularly to reduce cortisol levels and alleviate stress.

### Exercise Daily
Despite the challenges of exercising with weight gain and low self-esteem, physical activity is crucial for managing hypothyroidism. Engaging in outdoor exercises, like park walks with energizing music, can help improve mood, increase energy levels, reduce joint pain, build muscle mass, and maintain a healthy weight. Start with low-impact cardio exercises for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

Dealing with weight gain due to hypothyroidism may seem daunting, but with patience and dedication, it is achievable. Implementing these tips and strategies can help you manage your weight effectively.
