# New Zealand Step Aerobics: Workout Anywhere

Even though I’m a committed exerciser, I’m not the most coordinated person. Eager for a challenge, I decided to try one of New Zealand’s popular step aerobics workouts called Les Mills Bodystep. This workout not only promised to make me more coordinated but also showed me why it’s so popular.

Judson MacDonald, a fitness expert at Les Mills International, describes Bodystep as a dynamic full-body step workout that boosts strength, agility, and inspiration. Using a mix of bodyweight, bench exercises, and weights, this workout challenges muscles, enhances coordination, and boosts cardiovascular fitness.

I signed up for a Bodystep class at Les Mills Live in New Orleans. The class was packed with enthusiastic participants, creating a lively atmosphere with loud music and pulsating lights.

## Getting Started

In the class, I observed others moving gracefully as the music played. However, I struggled to keep up with the pace of the workout. The class included various functional exercises like step-ups, lunges, squats, and raises, all designed to be more like a dance routine than just a workout.

Despite the workout not being overly intense in terms of weight or reps, the fast pace made me break a sweat. Even without using heavy weights or the tallest steps, my fitness tracker showed a decent level of strain, indicating a moderate intensity.

According to MacDonald, Bodystep is suitable for all fitness levels due to adjustable steps and modifications guided by the instructor. The uplifting music and supportive environment made the class manageable even for a beginner like me. MacDonald recommended taking several classes to grasp the movements better, with instructors offering new workouts frequently.

Whether using Les Mills equipment or not, Bodystep provides a fun and uplifting fitness option that can be done anywhere. Although I didn’t feel less clumsy after one class, I’m optimistic that with time, I can enhance my coordination skills gradually.
