Organic food

What does it entail?   I have come across a lot of information regarding organic food.  Let me simplify it for you.  Organic food is produced through organic farming methods.  This approach involves minimal use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.  Organic pesticides are preferred over synthetic ones.  Furthermore, organic food is processed naturally without artificial methods or chemicals.

Pricing? In terms of cost, organic food is typically more expensive than conventionally produced food. For instance, I recently compared the price of organic lentils and found them to be pricier than non-organic varieties.

Benefits of organic food-

  1. Organic food is free from harmful pesticide residues, as synthetic chemicals are avoided. This ensures that no chemical pesticides enter your system.
  2. It is environmentally friendly and aids in reducing pollution caused by chemical pesticides.
  3. Organic food is fresher and often tastes better.

Gluten-free food

What’s the scoop on this? There has been a lot of buzz surrounding gluten-free products recently.  Gluten is a protein present in wheat, rye, barley, and their hybrids. Some individuals are allergic to gluten due to celiac disease, a condition affecting the small intestine. This autoimmune disorder causes the body to attack the intestinal lining in response to gluten ingestion, hindering nutrient absorption. Gluten-free foods are primarily designed for individuals with this condition.

Foods that are considered gluten-free

  • Corn
  • Rice
  • Buckwheat
  • Amaranth
  • Millet
  • Soy
  • Dairy products (Milk, butter, cheese, margarine, yogurt)
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Eggs
  • Nuts
  • Beans
  • Legumes

Pricing? Gluten-free items tend to be more expensive and may not be affordable for everyone.

A recent study revealed that a gluten-free diet is unnecessary for individuals without celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. It has become more of a dietary trend than a medical necessity. While individuals with celiac disease must adhere to this diet, others have adopted it for perceived health benefits. Gluten-free products, especially bread, have become increasingly available.

There is a lack of awareness about Celiac disease in India. It may not be beneficial for individuals without this condition to adopt a gluten-free diet, as it may result in missing out on essential vitamins and minerals present in whole grains.
