An Easy-to-Use Serum with 8 Key Ingredients for Perfect Skin

Face oils have stood the test of time in the realm of skincare. In recent years, their popularity has fluctuated based on trends and debates, especially on platforms like Instagram, regarding whether they cause breakouts or enhance skin quality. If you’re new to facial oils or have doubts about their effectiveness, starting with a lightweight oil-based serum is a smart choice.

Whimsy Official’s Halcyon Botanic Serum ($95)

The Halcyon Botanic Serum by Whimsy Official aims to tackle a common issue in the skincare industry,” says Victoria McAbee, the co-founder, and CEO. Unlike many facial oils packed with essential oils and fillers that can be harsh on the skin, this serum contains only eight natural ingredients: watermelon oil, rosehip seed oil, camellia seed oil, apricot kernel oil, strawberry seed oil, borage oil, jojoba oil, and carrot seed oil. It is suitable for all skin types, free of allergens, essential oils, vegan, natural, and non-comedogenic. Regular use is expected to smoothen, hydrate, and brighten the complexion.

Board-certified dermatologist Ted Lain, MD, and Chief Medical Officer at Sanova Dermatology, explains that the serum’s formulation mimics the lipids found in sebum (skin oil), such as squalene, fatty acids, wax, and cholesterol. According to board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD, the serum’s “jojoba oil closely resembles natural human sebum and helps enhance skin health.” The blend replaces sebum with essential lipids and antioxidants from botanical extracts that protect the skin against free radicals and sun damage.

The serum addresses common skin concerns like redness, hyperpigmentation, and acne by leveraging the benefits of its key ingredients. Borage oil calms and reduces redness and inflammation, strawberry seed oil brightens the skin, and watermelon oil, rich in alpha-linolenic acid, helps unclog pores.

As someone with combination skin and an oily T-zone, I hesitated to use face oils, especially in the summer. However, after trying the Whimsy Official Halcyon Botanic Serum for a month, I’m now a fan. Its quick absorption, lightweight feel, and ability to give my skin a natural glow sans makeup have won me over. I’ve streamlined my skincare routine to just a few drops of this serum, sunscreen, and cleanser, ditching the elaborate nine-step regimen.
