Digital health care provider Nurx has introduced an at-home acne care program to its array of services, which already includes online birth control prescriptions, STI screenings, and migraine care. For a fee of $35, individuals with mild to moderate acne can access an initial medical consultation, receive medications delivered to their homes, and benefit from a 10-week follow-up.

While transitioning to acne care might seem like a departure for Nurx, a company known for its focus on reproductive health, Nurx’s clinical team lead, Dr. Nancy Shannon, explains that the move was driven by patient demand. An internal survey revealed that a significant 85% of Nurx patients dealt with acne concerns, yet only 7% were under the care of a dermatologist.

Nurx possesses expertise in addressing hormonal issues that contribute to acne, derived from its interactions with the 350,000 patients seeking birth control. Dr. Shannon notes that many individuals seeking birth control also have acne concerns, either recognizing the benefits of oral contraceptives for acne or being referred to Nurx for assistance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the necessity for remote acne care, as in-person visits to healthcare providers have become challenging. Dr. Shannon acknowledges the rise of “maskne” – acne worsened by mask-wearing – affecting 66% of Nurx patients. Nurx aims to provide swift access to care, ensuring patients can receive medication within a week of consultation, an essential aspect considering the difficulty in securing dermatologist appointments.

At $35 for a consultation, Nurx’s acne care program offers an affordable alternative to traditional dermatology care, especially for uninsured individuals. By partnering with pharmacies that accept insurance, Nurx strives to make prescriptions accessible to all. The company promotes an integrative approach to acne care, emphasizing lifestyle factors and recommending over-the-counter remedies alongside prescriptions.

Nurx faces competition in the telehealth dermatology space, with companies like Hims & Hers offering similar services. However, Nurx’s model combines consultation fees with potential cost savings on prescriptions for insured patients. Looking ahead, Nurx plans to extend its dermatological services beyond acne care to cater to a broader demographic.

While current telehealth services like Nurx’s acne care are not universally available due to state regulations, Dr. Shannon anticipates increased accessibility post-pandemic. Telehealth offers advantages such as convenience and cost-effectiveness, aligning with Nurx’s goal of streamlining healthcare delivery. Ultimately, Nurx envisions telehealth consultations as seamless as sending a text message, prioritizing patient convenience and accessibility.
