Growing up, I often heard tales of my skilled skiing family members who tackled the slopes with ease. Despite my lineage, I had never skied before. When I finally decided to give it a try during a Colorado vacation in October 2019, things did not go as planned.

Equipped with tight boots and determination but lacking professional guidance, my first skiing experience was a series of tumbles and mishaps. That experience taught me the importance of preventing ski injuries to fully enjoy the sport.

To help you have a safer skiing experience, here are four tips from ski expert Kelly Jensen, the manager of The Alpineer in Crested Butte, part of the Christy Sports brand of stores:

1. Stay hydrated.

Staying hydrated is crucial before and during skiing. Proper hydration helps maintain joint lubrication, muscle movement, and prevents cramps. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption and ensure you drink enough water before and after skiing.

2. Stretch before and after skiing.

Stretching your hamstrings, quads, and calves before hitting the slopes is essential. Cold temperatures can affect your muscles, making them prone to injuries. Stretching can enhance your muscle reaction time and prevent falls.

3. Wear properly-fitted gear.

Properly fitted ski boots provide control and agility, helping you navigate challenging terrains. Ill-fitting gear can distract you and lead to accidents. Ensure your bindings are adjusted correctly to prevent knee and leg injuries.

4. Listen to your body.

Pay attention to your body’s signals before and during skiing. Start with easier runs to warm up and avoid pushing yourself beyond your limits. Skiing while fatigued increases the risk of injuries, so know when to take a break.

While I may return to the slopes in the future, I’ve learned the importance of proper preparation and caution. Skipping lessons and rushing into challenging terrain can lead to unnecessary risks. Remember, safety and enjoyment go hand in hand when skiing.
