Soccer Player Kelley O’Hara Shares the ‘Life-Changing’ Mindset Shift That’s Helped Her Find Success

In 2015 during the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Kelley O’Hara, a player for the US Women’s National Team, faced feelings of anxiety and self-doubt. She questioned why she wasn’t getting playing time, wondered when her coach would put her in, and doubted her own abilities.

However, she had an epiphany – she realized that seeking approval from her coaches wouldn’t make her feel like the soccer player she aspired to be. She understood that true confidence had to come from within herself.

In that moment, she decided to approach each practice and game as if she would be playing every minute. She committed to giving her best effort, regardless of external circumstances. This change in mindset led to her being selected to play in the semi-finals and finals, ultimately helping her team secure victory. O’Hara attributes her success to this shift in attitude. She emphasizes the importance of internal motivation over validation from external sources.

O’Hara highlights the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, a concept recognized in sports psychology. Intrinsic motivation originates from within oneself, driven by personal goals such as feeling good or improving sleep quality. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation relies on external rewards like awards or recognition from others.

While O’Hara values external validation and the thrill of winning, she stresses that self-assurance is fundamental for achieving success.

Finding motivation is crucial for personal growth. O’Hara recently partnered with Versus, a digital sports coaching and motivational platform where professional athletes and coaches, including herself, share stories and offer advice from the world of sports. The platform also focuses on fostering a supportive community.

O’Hara believes that a combination of internal strength and external support is essential for individuals to flourish.

She acknowledges the importance of support systems but emphasizes the significance of self-belief as a foundation for validation and success.
