Marios Politis: World Congress on Controversies in Neurology 2023
Professor Marios Politis has been asked to speak at the World Congress on Controversies in Neurology multiple times. Research conducted by Professor Politis has led to a body of scientific research investigating the pathophysiology of Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and other movement disorders.
This article will look at the 17th World Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy), which is scheduled to run from 23rd to 25th March 2023 in the stunning city of Dubrovnik, Croatia.
CONy is excited to welcome back delegates to its face-to-face meeting format, its prestigious faculty members ready and willing to share their experience and knowledge. CONy encourages all participants to take an active role, voting on debates and engaging faculty members in open discussions.
Professor Marios Politis, Professor of Neurology & Neuroimaging and Consultant Neurologist, serves as Director of Neurodegeneration Imaging Group. Professor Politis’s research involves clinical observation and the use of MR and PET imaging as a method of investigating pathophysiology, etiology, and the complications and effects of novel therapies in neurodegenerative disorders. He has significant experience, having served as Chief Investigator in several observational and interventional trials.
Over the years, Professor Politis has been recognised with a variety of coveted awards and distinctions including those from the Royal College of Physicians, Movement Disorder Society, European Academy of Neurology, and Society of Nuclear and Molecular Imaging. He is also a recipient of the American Academy of Neurology’s Jon Stolk Award in Movement Disorders.
The main topics of the World Congress on Controversies in Neurology 2023 will be:
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Headache
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders (NMOSD)
- Epilepsy
- Stroke
- Neurodegenerative Diseases

The 16th World Congress on Controversies in Neurology was staged virtually, with delegates invited to joint the ECF symposium on 25th March 2022 to engage in a discussion on the topic Assessing Treatment Response in Progressive MSwith Professors Letizia Leocani, Nicola De Stefano, Giancarlo Comi, Hans-Peter Hartung and Per Soelberg Sörensen.
Led by Multiple Sclerosis Section Heads Olaf Stüve of the US, Giancarlo Comi of Italy and Klaus Schmierer of the UK, MS Debates at the 2016 event explored issues such as the microbiome as a therapeutic target, the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions in disease control, and hematopoietic stem cell therapies.
Professor Marios Politis is an active member of numerous organisations, including the British Neuroscience Association, Movement Disorder Society and American Academy of Neurology. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students neuroscience, neurology and neuroimaging.
